Happy Easter!

Happy Easter!  This is a new design by Amanda Lawford that just arrived at the shop on Thursday.  I love holiday weekends!

I actually have time to stitch!

The canvas comes with Swarovski crystals that are attached with a Tiffany prong setting. I still need to add tiny lilac Swarovski crystals in the center of each orange cross.

Shall I start the companion to this egg or be a girl and work on the Christmas banner?

Carousel Horses

We’re starting to see sneak peeks of the new designs that will debut at the Destination Dallas Show on April 28th.

Melissa Prince has designed these magical little canvases of carousel horses for different seasons.

Turkey Work with River Silks

Oh yes I did!  I used River Silks for Turkey Work.  I mixed it with organza.  And poof!  How cool is that?  Now I just have to wait for more River Silks to come in.  Yes, even I as a shop owner have to wait for threads sometimes.

I’ll be teaching this piece starting June 15th .  You can do it in any of the three colorways.  All the stitches and fibers will be the same, just different colors.

Canvas $165

Thread Kit: TBD

Sign up cut off date: April 15th

Rebecca Banner Class 1

We just finished the first class on Rebecca Wood’s Santa in the Needlepoint Shop banner.

The focus of this piece is perspective and dimension.  How am I going to make it appear as though Santa is in the building and everything else is in front?  You’ll have to follow along.

The first thing I did was make the bricks on the front of the building come forward by padding them with Frosty Rays and laying a Satin stitch over.  I also used two different colors of Weeks overdye floss to create the shadows in the painting.  The most challenging aspect of stitching a Rebecca piece is to maintain the original beauty of her painting and shading.

The right side of the store is recessed. So I didn’t pad and only used 2 ply of floss.  Oh my! All right, enough about bricks.

Santa was a challenge because I wanted to use all my usual tricks, like Turkey Work and stitches.  However, Santa is pretty small, maybe only 4 inches.  Not a lot of room to maneuver.  I wanted to make his beard look fluffy but not actually be fluffy.  Bullions were the answer.

What I love most about this canvas is that each person can tell a different story with how they choose to stitch the piece.  Is Santa buying a new piece?  Has he been a good boy and stitched his background first?  Is he buying a gift for Mrs. Claus? Is his background going to be the same color as the canvas or is he going to do something wild with it?  Susan suggested the elves were going to stich the background. The possibilities are endless.  Let’s see what everyone comes up with. My Santa has been a  bad boy and not stitched any background before he starts the fun part.  Art replicates life!

It’s not too late to join us.  Let me know if you want to come on board.  I have a few canvases in stock.  203-210-5107

What part will I work on next?  Stay tuned for the next installment.

Julia Snyder Day 2

Saturday was a WILD day!  The ladies were going crazy.  Just check out how excited Cammie was.

You would have thought Cammie was on The Price is Right  Every time Julia called her number for her turn, she’s jump and down yelling “That’s me! That’s me!”

Debbie worked on these fun mermaids.  Even the canvases were fun!

Susan worked on Alehouse Annie and she brought along a famous Facebook friend

Leopold Lovelettuce.  Yes.  He has his own Facebook page.  And he deserves it. He is stunning!

Susan brought this beautiful Liz stocking

Joy worked on this pair of owls from Maggie

We enjoyed these delicious works of art from my shop neighbor, The Painted Cookie

Judy worked on this Renaissance piece.  Are you getting an idea of the silliness that was going on here?

Kim worked on the Airstream birdhouse by Melissa Prince

She looks like she’s working so diligently and concentrating

She spent the day sitting next to Mary Susan.  Again, appears to be working very hard

on the Partridge in a Pear Tree by Melissa Prince.

But they were sitting with Cammie,

so we know just how hard they were working.  They had the best time.  Laughing all day long.  Mary Susan told me that this was the most fun day she’s had in a long time.  Mission accomplished.

Don’t worry if you couldn’t join us this time.  Julia will be back September 20th and 21st to celebrate my actual birthday.  I can’t think of a more fun way to celebrate!

Thank you Julia for sharing your expertise and enthusiasm with us.  And thanks to my girls who busted their butts all week to get the shop in tip top shape (and build a new store on the second floor in a week).

Julia Snyder Day 1

We had SOOOOOO much fun with Julia!  She is amazing!  Her tips and techniques, thread and stitch selection are incredible.  I am fascinated how she recalls so many stitches, as if she is just grabbing them out of the air as they float by.  Genius!

We had 24 women join us over the two days.  Many live locally, but others came from far and wide: New York, Maryland, Massachusetts, Virginia and even California!

Aggie was getting a little help with buttonhole on a bar with a bead. That’s a mouthful! That is used on the Raymond Crawford “Cheer” piece that Julia has done a stitch guide for.  Aggie also brought with her the new piece by Ewe & Eye “March Winds.”  (You know, the one with the birdhouses.)  I see a class and stitch guide in the future.

Laurie worked on the piece “Girlfriends” by Maggie.  I love this piece.  It looks just like my best friend and I (when my hair isn’t blown out, which you’ll never see)

Susan brought back the Melissa Shirley giant witch hat that she worked on last year with Julia.  She also got some help on a few new pieces, like a mermaid backgammon board.

Marina worked on this adorable snowman.  I know there were lots of oohs and aahs coming from that table.  Marina will have to update us with a picture at some point.

Joanne worked on this beautiful little girl.

Kate worked on this John Johannsen chicken.

I know I missed a few pieces, but we were having so much fun.

Stay tuned for the day 2 installment.  You don’t want to miss that.  They were a WILD bunch!
